Fall Media Production Program Kick-Off
We just kicked off the We Are New Voices Fall Media Production Program today at Sharpstown High School. We presented to two broadcasting classes and more than 40 students.
The program includes radio writing and production training, as well as integration of online technologies. Students will produce radio pieces in exchange for course credit. The best pieces will be selected to air on Youth Radio.
Sharpstown is just one of several high schools in the Houston area we're taking the program to this semester. I look forward to seeing what this semester's participants produce.
Youth Radio is an initiative of We Are New Voices, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit. Please make a donation to support our efforts now!
Teen says he's a vampire
Could there really be a real life teen vampire? While he may not actually be one, 19-year-old Lyle Monroe Bensley believes he is, and he's developed a taste for blood.
On Saturday, August 13th, he broke into a woman's apartment in Galveston, Texas. He bit the woman, all the while hissing and growling. Then he also tried to drag her out of the apartment.
When police arrested him, he told them he was a vampire.
Sorority girls' rapping video
Epic fail! Members of the Panhellenic Association at the University of Alabama posted a recruitment video on August 13th, featuring several girls rapping. They even sing Rebecca Black's "Friday."

Harry Potter mania on premiere of final film
At midnight, Friday, July 15th, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiered at theatres around the world. It's the final movie based of the best-selling books by J. K. Rowling.
"I've been waiting for this moment for the past 11 years," said one Potter fan.
Even though there will be no more Harry Potter movies--or books, for that matter--the story will continue to live on.
"There's still a lot of things that she (Rowling) didn't tie up in the end that we could still talk about and discuss."
HP fans attempt to set world record
At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, hundreds of Potter fans donned costumes and gathered at Houston's City Centre to attempt to set the world record for the most Harry Potters in one place at one time. At 9 p.m. local time, about 150 Harry Potters lined up and stood for 10 minutes will event organizers took a head count.
There is currently no record for most Harry Potters in one place. Organizers plan to send their tally to Guinness World Records in London in hopes of making history.
Yale frat controversy
Check this out: members of Yale's popular Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity are in hot water after a sexist display of opinion last week.
Apparently, fraternity members walked around the university chanting things like 'no means yes' and 'yes means anal.' Tut, tut.
It was all caught on tape, and posted on YouTube. Here's the video:
Why I vote
I just turned 18 last month. That means I can go to clubs, buy cigarettes...and vote.
As soon as I could, I went down to the voting station and cast my ballot during the early voting period (I won't say who I voted for). Why wouldn't I want to vote? It's an opportunity to have a say in how things are run locally and nationally, an opportunity people in so many other countries don't have and are actively fighting for.
So I was rather surprised to hear that only 3.5 percent of my peers plan to vote in this election according to a KUHF/KHOU poll (well, surprised isn't really the word. Disappointed??)
Last year, large numbers of young voters rushed to polls to cast their vote for president, but after the excitement of last year's election died down, we're back to business as usual: few young people can be bothered to vote.
Vote, because whether you think so or not, the outcome of this election will impact you. In Texas, we're voting for our next governor, and one of the many issues at the forefront of the election is education. We need to see you out there. Young people need to build a presence at the polls and show more interest in the policy-making process.
I recommend voting early. The time it took for me to stand in line and cast my ballot, amounted to only 15 minutes tops. Remember, voting is your civic responsibility.
Twilighters chomping down...literally! with bloodsucking fad
There's nothing quite as disturbing as real-life Twilight-inspired vampires, right? Except these ones don't sparkle.
On the surface they appear to be ordinary people like you and me...but they're on a blood-sucking mission. Since the release of the Twilight movies, many teens have begun biting each other. Yes, biting. Sometimes even to draw blood!
Then there's also reports that some are cutting themselves so they can taste each other's blood and putting the video on Youtube.
I didn't believe it when I saw it. Check it out:

April Fools getting lame?
Playing tricks on people has long been a tradition on the first day of April. It has the potential for being one of the most fun and unique holidays of the year.
But is it just me, or are April Fools pranks getting lamer? The ones I've heard so far certainly qualify: 'Ha, made you look' and the like.
I guess my message to people is: GET FUNNIER!!!
Giving thanks and giving back
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope you enjoyed yours as much as I enjoyed mine.
This Thanksgiving I got the opportunity to volunteer at the Salvation Army where they were feeding the homeless. In fact, my co-host Maleeha Kamal was also there (she comes every year).
I had a great time. I came in at about 10 a.m. and was helping serve plates for over two hours. Meanwhile, Maleeha greeted people at the door. I think volunteering is one of those things you have to try before you realize how fulfilling it can be.
Anyway, later in the day me and Maleeha went down to Post Oak to see the Christmas lights turned on. Post Oak Blvd was packed with people.
