U.S., other countries impose sanctions on Syria
The U.S. as well as several European countries have called for Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to step down.
Since March, Syrians have called for the leader to step down and for democracy. Government security forces have cracked down on protests, killing an estimated 2,000 people.
The U.S. also implemented tougher sanctions on Syria.
